The Strengths of ADHD: Energy, Focus, and Problem-Solving

By Sarah Earles, MS, LPC, NCC | March 07, 2025

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is sometimes a befuddling diagnosis. More than simple hyperactivity, it affects mental, physical, emotional, and relational health. Much has been written about some of the deficits associated with ADHD. But what about the good? Is there any good in this form of neurodiversity? In fact, there is!

While individuals with ADHD can have some struggles, they also have some strengths that come with the condition. Inattention is often a marker of ADHD (ADDitude editors, 2023). This can present as forgetfulness, distraction, or disengagement. On the flip side, however, individuals with ADHD can also have hyperfocus, and the ability to hone in on and accomplish very specific goals (ADDitude, 2022). During times of hyperfocus, individuals are less distractible and can therefore often accomplish a great deal.

Individuals with ADHD can often take in a great deal of stimuli at the same time. This makes them good problem solvers, as they can see vast and varied solutions to many obstacles. (ADDitude editors, 2022). Individuals with ADHD tend to think creatively, which also helps in this area (Smith, 2021; Totally ADD, n.d.). Individuals with ADHD can often carry out solutions that those without ADHD cannot, as individuals with ADHD are great multi-taskers (ADDitude editors, 2022; Smith, 2021). Individuals with ADHD are great assets to their communities when their strengths are recognized.

With their ability to see many different perspectives, individuals with ADHD can also provide great benefits to relationships. They can find compassion for people very different from themselves (ADDitude, 2022). They can be pillars of strength in crisis (Totally ADD, n.d.). They can find humor in sometimes difficult situations (ADDitude, 2022). They may inspire others with their energy, determination, perseverance, and passion for life.

A diagnosis of ADHD is one of divergence, not necessarily detriment. Individuals with ADHD have great strengths to offer the world. In fact, their strengths often emerge as the bright side of the struggles. The key to realizing the strengths of ADHD is to channel that energy and focus. It can be done, and it can be done well. There really is a lot that’s good about ADHD, probably much more than the neurotypical brain can recognize!
